“less spectacle, more substance.” — this was our mantra for the 2nd annual A RiSING Community celebration and we achieved it with panache.
Temperatures were above 100 degrees in dry heat for the ARC last year, and this year, mother nature gave us a rainy treat in the mid-80s with high humidity; nevertheless, we persevered, and with the help of gracious and enduring volunteers, the event progressed in smooth civility with thunderous applause from the skies.
As the moms are getting more involved with the event, we experience an evolution of our recipes with stronger cultural influence. This was the first event where volunteers in the kitchen collectively hand-rolled vegetarian sushi, sourcing as many organic ingredients that are available to infuse into our ethnic cuisine.
Our live entertainment line-up included a returning musical performer Conn Raney, a debut UCI Medleys Choir Group comprised of medical students from UC Irvine, and Boy’s League members performing magic tricks as well as singing.
We also have 2 special guests from the homeless community, James Freeman and James MacDonald share with us their artistic talents, Motown musical style and spoken word!
For the first time at our event, we launched the mobile showers concept using mobile shower tents and Summer Showers portable water packs to provide clients with a refreshing and private experience. Homemade soap was also provided from the family member of one of our directors.
Furthermore, we started filming interviews of homeless individuals sharing with us the story of their lives and the struggles that have brought them here today. Our goal is to source this material to produce a documentary on homelessness in the America.
Girl Scout member Sarah Stumpf joined us to help provide homeless pets with a wash, shampoo, and dry service. We also used our homemade Lavender oil blend spray on the pets to help repel pests.
